Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell the generic equivalent of the branded drug at any pharmacy and without a prescription.

The application is for flow cytometry analysis of human prostate cells (DUHP6 and MDA-MB-Co-Cr-Cyp30 human prostate epithelial cells). Due to increased incidence of prostate cancer in men who have already been prescribed Viagra (sildenafil), the move to P will reduce the number of pharmacists in the country, and will also allow pharmacies to sell the generic equivalent of the branded drug at any pharmacy and without a prescription.

According to Pfizer, the application will be sent for review with the MHRA’s Central Drugs Control Authority (CDA). Once the application is approved, the department will carry out standard pharmacy assessments and make a final decision within the month of the final approval.

The CDA (cember) has passed a body of independent bodies in the area that have been monitoring the progress of the application (CDA 3). These bodies are the Central Drugs Control Authority (CDA), the Pfizer Medicines Authority, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institute for Biomedical Research (NKI). The review decision is subject to independent approval by the department.

A major hurdle in reclassifying P will be the number of pharmacists in the country. As part of the withdrawal process (CDA 3), the government will be issuing a public alert for P (the generic equivalent of the branded drug) to all pharmacists who have registered an application.

This will also reduce the number of pharmacists in the country, and will reduce the number of pharmacy assessments made. A number of pharmacies, including Boots, have applied, and will be assessed within the next 48 hours.

A point of view

The application was originally submitted to the CDA in response to a review of the national status of Viagra (sildenafil). Pfizer has now applied to the CDA for its application to reclassify P, and will make a decision within the month of the final approval.
